Europe’s night trains in 2026: five new lines, ten lost, and Paris cut off from Nightjet

What changed on the continent’s sleeper map this year, and what is left.

The 2026 edition of Back-on-Track’s night train map, the campaign group’s survey of every overnight service in Europe, shows a network that is changing shape rather than simply growing.

Five lines were added and ten disappeared.

What went

The biggest losses were in Paris.

ÖBB withdrew its Nightjets from Paris to Berlin and Paris to Vienna in December 2025 after the French government stopped paying for them.

Nightjet also dropped its Munich and Vienna trains to La Spezia.

In Sweden, SJ ended Stockholm–Narvik, at 1,456 km one of Europe’s longest night-train routes, and Göteborg–Duved; a Sofia–Varna, a Sofia–Burgas and Bucharest–Sighetu Marmației also went.

What arrived

European Sleeper filled the Paris gap itself with a Paris–Brussels–Hamburg–Berlin train from March 2026, and added Brussels–Milan in September.

Poland’s PKP added Gdynia–Prague and Przemyśl–Munich, Czech Railways added Prague–Przemyśl, and Finland’s VR added a second Helsinki–Kolari train.

  • Still running16 Nightjet lines including Vienna–Brussels (3× a week), plus EuroNight partners

The shape of it

Vienna and Munich remain the hubs, with Nightjets fanning out to Rome, Venice, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Zürich and Brussels.

Brussels is becoming the western hub: three Nightjets a week to Vienna, and nine European Sleeper departures a week to Berlin, Prague and Milan.

We have drawn all of it on one interactive night train map.
